Does my child need an expander?

A palatal expander is an orthodontic device designed to widen the upper jaw (palate) in children and young teenagers. It works by applying gradual pressure on the upper molars to expand the palatal bones. This process takes advantage of the natural growth potential in young patients, making it possible to correct issues such as a narrow palate, crowded teeth, crossbites, or misaligned dental arches. Over time, the expansion of the palate allows for better alignment of the upper and lower jaws, improving bite function and aesthetic appearance. The treatment duration with a palatal expander varies, depending on the individual's needs and the extent of expansion required.
